Chapter 1
Six years after their breakup, Jayceon Melendez's first love had returned from abroad.
And she'd brought a five-year-old son with her.
Since then, he hadn't come home for a month, telling Arabella Palmer he was on a business trip.
Today was Arabella and Jayceon's third wedding anniversary.
She prepared a candlelit dinner and a gift, then messaged him on WhatsApp.
She waited until 9 PM, but he still hadn't come back.
Then, his sister Kimberly Melendez called, telling her to check the messages she'd sent.
Arabella hung up and opened their chat.
With just one glance, the smile died on her lips.
The plate slipped out of her grasp and shattered. The shards cut into her ankle, drawing blood.
But Arabella stood frozen, like she couldn't feel the pain.
Kimberly had sent screenshots of Jayceon's Instagram post. He had rented out all of Mondi Beach. Right now, he was there with his first love, setting off birthday fireworks for their son.
Arabella clicked through the pictures: the beach, a yacht, fireworks, roses...
Jayceon held a five-year-old child in one arm, his other hand, adorned with a wedding ring, wrapping around a woman's waist.
Those moments captured in the pictures were so beautiful and romantic. The caption read: Homemade blueberry cake for my beloveds.
Their love was evident.
Arabella's mind went blank.
She fumbled to open Jayceon's profile, but there was nothing.
She opened her mouth but couldn't say a word.
She didn't know when Jayceon had set his posts to be invisible to her.
Those screenshots shattered the last bit of hope she'd been holding onto.
Fuming, Arabella called Jayceon.
When he didn't answer, she called again.
After he hung up on her for the third time, she got a text from him: "I'm busy."
He was so impatient with her.
A wave of helplessness, anger, jealousy, and resentment washed over her.
She curled into a ball, hands clutching her head. Her heart shattered, making it hard for her to breathe.
She screamed, pulling at her own hair in a burst of frustration, then burst into tears.
Hearing a knock, she struggled to her feet and opened the door.
Kimberly was shocked by how Arabella looked. "Bella, are you okay?"
Tear stains still fresh on her face, Arabella shook her head numbly.
Kimberly stomped her foot in a rage. "Let's go to Mondi Beach and confront Jay right now!"
Arabella slowly calmed down. "Kim, I'll handle this myself."
Her mother had just had heart bypass surgery and was still in the hospital. She couldn't fall apart now.
By the time Kimberly left, it was past midnight.
Arabella wandered through the house like a ghost, numb.
She and Jayceon had grown up together.
Everyone in their circle knew she'd had a crush on him since they were kids.
And they also knew that Jayceon had always been hung up on his first love, the girl he was forced to break up with.
He'd only married Arabella because of their families' arrangement.
For three years, Arabella thought that if she tried hard enough, she could eventually win his heart.
But she never succeeded. Instead, she got the news that he and his first love had reunited.
After twenty-five years of devotion, spanning a childhood crush and a three-year marriage, it had all been for nothing.
It was time for all this to end.
She knew exactly what to do next. But her heart hurt so much she could barely breathe.
She was torn, caught between logic and emotion.
***
That night, Jayceon still didn't come home.
For the next three days, Arabella stayed at the hospital caring for her mother.
Not once did Jayceon call or even text her.
Once her mother's condition stabilized, her father told her to go home and rest.
Late that night, half-asleep, she stirred at the sound of the bedroom door opening.
Soon, the sound of running water came from the bathroom.
Not long after, she felt the bed dip beside her. The clean scent of men's shower gel woke her up a bit.
Before she fully realized it, she was in Jayceon's arms.
After over a month, he'd finally decided to come back.
He must've been very happy staying with his new family.
Feeling Arabella's body tense up, Jayceon knew she was awake.
He tightened his arm around her waist and turned her to face him.
His hungry kisses fell on her sensitive neck. Under the blanket, his hand skillfully pulled down the strap of her nightgown.
In their three years of marriage, Jayceon was only this gentle and passionate toward her in bed.
Every time she saw him lose control like this, she'd naively believed it was proof of his love.
Instinctively, she grabbed Jayceon's hand that was roaming her body. For the first time, she told him, "Don't."
Chapter 2
Hearing her hoarse voice, he thought she was aroused, so his kiss deepened.
Jayceon knew her body too well. Against her will, her defenses began to crumble.
Just as she was about to give in, those images flashed through her mind: the beach, the yacht, the fireworks, the roses, her husband's ringed hand on another woman's waist, and that loving caption.
A wave of nausea hit her. She pushed him away and leaned over the bed, retching.
Jayceon turned on the light, and the sexual tension in the room vanished completely.
He got up and rubbed her back. "Are you ill?"
She pushed him away and went straight to the bathroom.
She wasn't ill, just sick of him.
Jayceon frowned at her back, then went downstairs to get her water.
He didn't notice her swollen eyes, her raspy voice, or the cut on her ankle.
When he returned a few minutes later, she was already out of the bathroom, ready to climb back into bed.
He handed her the glass. "I'll book a restaurant tomorrow to make up for our anniversary."
He gave no explanation and showed no guilt, merely informing her.
She ignored the water and lay down. "Don't bother."
So he'd remembered their anniversary after all.
But he'd still spent it renting a beach, setting off fireworks with his first love and their son all night.
Since their wedding day, she'd taken care of his every need, never letting him do any housework.
Yet he'd offered to make a blueberry cake for them.
He cheated on her and had a five-year-old son with his first love. But he still acted as if nothing had happened and wanted to be intimate with her.
He brought up last night so casually, having not a single trace of guilt.
For the first time, Arabella realized the man she'd loved for so long was a hypocrite.
They both fell silent. The air grew heavy.
Just then, Jayceon's phone screen lit up.
Jayceon glanced at his phone, then at Arabella.
When she didn't react, he quickly replied to the message and turned off the screen.
He was clearly distracted. "Let's get some rest."
But Arabella couldn't fall asleep. Even with her eyes closed, her mind was filled with the harmonious scene of Jayceon holding his son in one arm and his beloved first love in the other.
Gripped by anger, she felt the urge to grab his phone right then and confront him, to finally end it all.
Reason reminded her that her mother had just had heart surgery and was still in the hospital. She couldn't start a divorce right now.
At 3 a.m., Jayceon's phone lit up again.
Less than fifteen minutes later, he left the villa.
Hearing the car engine start outside, Arabella slowly opened her eyes.
A single text was all it took to make him leave in the middle of the night.
That was the influence his first love had over him.
Arabella wanted to scream and throw a fit, but she had no strength left in her body.
She could barely even speak, let alone do anything else besides breathe.
Early the next morning, Arabella forced herself to take breakfast to her parents at the hospital.
Her parents were shocked when they saw how haggard she looked.
Her mother, Kayla Kemp, was still weak in bed with tubes attached. "Bella, what's wrong?"
Arabella forced a smile. "Don't worry, Mom. I just didn't sleep well last night."
Her dad, Roderick Palmer, peeled half an apple and handed it to her. "The doctor just did rounds. Your mom doesn't have any post-op complications. Her cut was healing well. She might be discharged in a week."
Arabella finally let out a breath at the good news.
After helping her mom finish breakfast, Arabella went to speak with the attending physician.
On her way back, near the billing area, she unexpectedly ran into Jayceon.
With his tall frame, good looks, and cold, noble aura, he was impossible to miss.
They locked eyes. Jayceon frowned slightly and walked over.
Arabella noticed the stack of receipts in his hand but didn't ask.
It was Wednesday, 9 AM now.
At that hour, he should have been in a meeting with senior executives at the Melendez Building.
But he showed up at the hospital instead. Arabella didn't need to guess the reason behind this.
She held back the urge to ask him.
She was afraid she'd lose control, yelling and fighting like some crazy woman.
She feared that her parents would find out and that she'd fall apart before she could fix anything.
Heartbroken, she stood silently, waiting for him to speak... or not.
Jayceon reached for the papers in her hand, but just then, his phone rang again.
He withdrew his hand and checked the screen.
Chapter 3
"I need to take this," he said, then turned and walked toward the elevators.
He walked away quickly, his voice low and gentle as he answered, "Be good. Knock it off."
That soft, coaxing tone cut Arabella deep.
She couldn't hold back anymore. She hid in the restroom and cried her heart out.
So, he could be this patient and gentle.
She'd known Jayceon for twenty-five years, yet he'd never once used that gentle tone with her.
She waited until she'd calmed down before leaving the restroom.
After quickly touching up her makeup, she returned to the hospital room.
Kayla noticed something was off right away. She sent Roderick out and motioned for Arabella to come closer.
When Arabella got close, Kayla asked weakly, "Bella, did you and Jay fight?"
Arabella looked down and shook her head. "No, Mom. We're fine."
Just then, Roderick walked into the ward with Jayceon.
Kayla smiled when she saw Jayceon. "Jay, you're so busy with work. You didn't have to come."
Jayceon set down the nutrition supplements he'd brought. "I reached out to a top heart specialist for you, Mom. We'll schedule a full checkup before you're discharged."
Roderick looked at Jayceon, his expression full of pride. "You're so considerate. You've been such a great support to us all these years. We owe you so much."
Jayceon walked to the bedside, his eyes lingering on Arabella's noticeably red and swollen eyes. "We're family. You don't need to thank me."
Arabella stood to give him her seat, but he gently pressed her back down. "I'll stand."
Sitting there, watching Jayceon chat warmly with her parents, Arabella had to look away.
Three years ago, the Palmer family went bankrupt and owed a huge debt.
Despite the pressure, Jayceon paid off their debts, settled her parents, sent her brother to a private school, and married her as promised.
Back then, she'd naively thought he must have some feelings for her.
After getting married, she once accidentally overheard Jayceon talking to his father. It was then that she soberly realized that his decision to marry her had been a calculated decision.
Jayceon had told his dad that in business, reputation and integrity mattered most.
He said helping the Palmers when they were down would earn him both fame and profit.
He'd been right.
After marrying her, his good reputation had brought great benefits to the Melendez Group.
His marriage to her greatly enhanced his reputation, which in turn brought significant benefits to the Melendez Group.
Marrying her had been his second choice, something he'd done out of necessity, a compromise.
As soon as his first love came back, he'd hurried to get back together with her.
He was overjoyed she'd given him a son, completely forgetting he already had a wife.
Arabella's face looked really pale.
Kayla felt distressed for her daughter. She told Jayceon to take Arabella home to rest.
Jayceon and Arabella remained silent after they left the ward.
As they reached the elevators, Jayceon took her arm. "You look terrible. You didn't sleep well last night?"
Arabella smiled bitterly.
He'd reunited with his first love and their son and missed their third wedding anniversary.
And he thought her bad mood was just from lack of sleep.
His actions showed how he'd treated his beloved differently from the way he treated her.
Yet, she'd just been a fool not to see that until now.
She quietly pulled her arm back. "You go ahead. I want to walk around a bit."
When the elevator arrived, she turned toward another one.
But Jayceon took her arm again and guided her into his elevator. "I booked dinner tonight at your favorite place."
She nodded without enthusiasm.
As others entered the elevator, Jayceon drew her closer against him.
He looked down at the quiet woman in his arms and frowned.
Since he'd known her, Arabella had always been lively.
She always tried to be near him and call him affectionately.
Now she was so quiet.
When they got off the elevator, Arabella refused to let Jayceon take her home.
Once they parted, she went straight to a law firm.
She paid 30 dollars an hour to have divorce papers drawn up.
At seven that evening, Arabella arrived at the restaurant.
Jayceon politely pulled out her chair for her.
She sat down and quietly watched him order.
He was wearing a black business suit with a matching black shirt, but it didn't look dull. Instead, it made him seem even more refined and composed.
The Melendez family had groomed Jayceon since childhood to be their heir. He was blessed with a good family background, a top-notch education, and excellent skills, manners, and intelligence.
In twenty-five years of knowing him, she'd never heard him swear or lose his cool.
Chapter 4
Even when speaking to waitstaff, he was polite, as if everything was under his control.
Jayceon was exceptional.
But such an exceptional man had married a woman he didn't love. Divorce was inevitable.
While waiting for their food, Jayceon placed a jewelry box before her. "For our anniversary."
Arabella nodded and glanced at it with a detached expression, holding her water glass with both hands.
She'd liked Jayceon for twenty-two years and been married to him for three.
She knew better than anyone how cold and distant Jayceon was beneath his gentle and polite facade.
When she was younger, she'd always pestered him for gifts.
When he got annoyed, he'd give her something, and she'd show it off for days.
After her family's bankruptcy, her mother delivered a harsh reality.
Their fall from high society meant she was now just a common girl and no longer good enough for Jayceon.
From then on, she never dared to act spoiled or ask him for anything.
However, even though he didn't love her, Jayceon always kept up appearances.
Every year, he gave her gifts for her birthday, Valentine's Day, their anniversary, and even Women's Day.
Seeing her lack of interest, Jayceon opened the box himself and took out a diamond bracelet.
Arabella could tell at a glance it was worth at least six figures.
He reached for her left hand to put it on her.
She instinctively pulled back, but he held her firmly.
He looked up at her, his eyes sharp with a hint of scrutiny. "You don't like it?"
In the past, even a cheap hair tie from him would've made her happy for weeks.
Now he was putting a diamond bracelet on her, and she was pulling away.
She shook her head. "It's fine."
He fastened it around her wrist. "It looks beautiful."
Arabella said, "Thank you."
Jayceon frowned.
Arabella had followed him around since she could talk, always asking him for things.
Whether the gift was expensive or cheap, she'd take whatever he gave her.
After three years of marriage, now she'd learned to keep her distance.
She was probably upset he'd missed their anniversary because of Georgina.
He served her some food. "Your favorite dark chocolate mousse."
Arabella looked at the plate, then up at him. "If I wanted you to make it yourself, would you learn how to?"
He cut his steak elegantly, his voice deep and sultry. "Leave it to the professionals. Even an apprentice here could do better than I do. Buy whatever you want. Don't worry about the cost."
Arabella lowered her gaze, hiding her disappointment and pain.
He could make a blueberry cake for his first love and their son, even post about it proudly on Instagram. But he wouldn't learn to make a simple dessert for her.
The chasm between his treatment of his beloved and the woman he didn't love had never been starker.
Arabella took a bite of the dark chocolate mousse.
It tasted bitter and terrible.
She struggled to swallow it, just like she was pressing down her feelings, leaving the searing bitterness with no outlet.
She didn't feel like talking anymore. The food in her mouth was tasteless.
Jayceon ate like he always did, quiet and graceful.
They both fell quiet. The only sounds were the occasional clinks of silverware.
The atmosphere felt strangely heavy.
Jayceon stopped eating and stared at Arabella.
When she was little, she couldn't sit still at meals. When she grew up, she talked nonstop at the dining table.
When it was just the two of them, she'd practically sit in his lap and beg him to feed her.
He'd once thought she had too much energy and even suggested her parents take her to see a doctor.
She had always expressed her anger by crying, shouting, or acting cute—never with this kind of coldness.
Jayceon tugged irritably at his collar.
Just then, his phone lit up with a text.
He glanced at the screen and turned it off.
He was about to pour more juice for Arabella when his phone started vibrating.
He hesitated, declined the call, and filled her glass.
But before he could set the pitcher down, his phone buzzed again.
Their eyes met. Jayceon's expression darkened slightly.
Arabella's gaze fell on his constantly vibrating phone.
She'd known Jayceon for years. Normally, even if something was urgent, she'd only call him once.
If he didn't answer, she would text him. She might send dozens of WhatsApp messages in a row, but she never dared to call him repeatedly.
That was what Jayceon expected from her.
Besides, she knew he was busy with so many business events. She didn't want to bother him.
This caller was clearly his unforgettable love.
She could see the urgency in his eyes—but not anger.
Chapter 5
After the fourth call came through, Jayceon spoke up, "I'll leave the driver for you. Go home and rest. Don't wait for me."
As he stood, so did Arabella.
Enduring the dull ache in her chest, she picked up her purse and phone. "You're busy. I'll take a taxi."
He didn't explain. She didn't ask.
Distracted, she rose from her seat and accidentally bumped into a passing server. Her phone and handbag fell to the ground, the contents of her bag scattering everywhere, including the divorce papers she had just printed at the law firm.
Jayceon bent to pick them up, but Arabella grabbed the documents before he could.
It wasn't the time to confront him yet.
She'd wait until after her mother was discharged.
Jayceon looked at the makeup scattered everywhere, then at the papers in her hand. His eyes grew cautious.
He reached for them. "What are these documents?"
"Just some medical files," she said vaguely.
He didn't believe her. "Really?"
She tried to pull away, but he nearly got hold of the papers.
They each held one end, neither letting go.
Just as she was about to lose her grip, Jayceon's phone vibrated again.
He glanced at Arabella, then released his hold.
Jayceon left in a hurry, leaving the car and driver for Arabella.
But she sent the driver away and took a different taxi, following Jayceon to the hospital.
She wanted to see what the woman who had been on Jayceon's mind for so many years looked like.
Arabella waited for him to get into an elevator before she got into another one.
When she got off the elevator, he was nowhere to be seen.
She couldn't help but laugh at herself.
She was once a proud woman, but now she was reduced to stalking her cheating husband in the shadows, filled with bitterness.
She felt completely miserable.
If she weren't so worried about her mother's health, she would've screamed at Jayceon and just let him go.
This torn, painful feeling was driving her insane.
After calming down, Arabella dried her tears, fixed her makeup, and went to her mother's room.
Seeing her daughter show up so late, Kayla grew worried. "Bella, tell me the truth. Did you argue with Jay?"
Arabella pulled a chair to the bedside and forced a smile. "No, Mom. We didn't argue."
Once, she'd boldly told her parents that marrying Jayceon would make her happy.
Now, she couldn't bring herself to tell them their perfect son-in-law had cheated and that she wanted a divorce.
Roderick handed her the snacks a relative had brought. "Bella, Jay has supported our whole family for the last three years. If there's a problem, talk to him properly. Don't throw a tantrum like a spoiled girl again."
Kayla Kemp looked at Arabella with distress. "You're 25 years old now. Wise up. Jay is the Melendez family's only heir. Have a child with him. That's how you make a marriage last."
Arabella stayed silent.
It was Jayceon who didn't want children with her.
She remembered once when he came back from a week-long business trip.
She'd put the condoms away.
That night, Jayceon was especially passionate. They had sex all night without taking any measures to prevent pregnancy.
She was thrilled, thinking he'd finally agreed to have a baby.
But the next morning, he handed her a pack of morning-after pills and fed her one himself.
After that, she stopped trying to get pregnant. She stopped hoping for a child.
Only now did she understand: Jayceon wasn't against having kids. He just didn't want them with her.
Arabella's younger brother, Emmett Palmer, stopped by after evening classes. He grinned when he saw her. "Bella, I just saw Jay."
Arabella's smile froze.
Kayla frowned. "Bella, did Jay come with you?"
Flustered, Arabella lied, "He was visiting a friend. I just tagged along."
She turned to Emmett. "Emmie, where did you see him?"
Emmett scratched his head. "We got in the elevator together. I remembered he pressed the button to the 13th floor."
After excusing herself, Arabella went alone to the 13th floor.
She didn't dare ask around openly, so she walked down the hallway, checking each room.
She wasn't the one at fault, but each step forward filled her with more dread.
This floor was all VIP single rooms. There weren't many people in the hallway. It was quiet.
Suddenly, Arabella stopped outside a partly open door.
Through the gap, she saw Jayceon standing beside a hospital bed, holding a woman in his arms.
This had to be his unforgettable love, the woman he'd clung to all these years: Georgina Carrillo.
Arabella had heard the name before, but this was the first time she'd seen her.
Chapter 6
Georgina sat on the edge of the bed, her back to the door. Her arms were wrapped around Jayceon's waist, her face buried in his chest. Her long hair draped over his arm.
Even looking from behind, Arabella could tell Georgina was beautiful.
Georgina stood up and wrapped her arms around Jayceon's neck. She asked with a choky voice, "Jay, can't you stay with me tonight?"
So, they were already this close.
As Jayceon gently removed Georgina's arms from his neck, Arabella caught sight of the bracelet on Georgina's wrist.
The diamonds sparkled brilliantly, a sight that stung Arabella deeply.
Slowly, she raised her left hand to look at the bracelet she wore. The two bracelets were identical.
That compliment, "It looks beautiful," hadn't been about her. It was about the bracelet and his unforgettable love.
Her mind went blank. She could no longer hear their conversation.
Consumed by anger, Arabella tore off the bracelet and threw it away.
She stumbled away from the door and broke down in a deserted corner.
She felt like she was dying.
She absent-mindedly got home.
When she cried herself out, her mind cleared, but her body felt exhausted.
After her shower, she tried to turn on the hair dryer, but her fingers were too stiff to even press the button.
She lay quietly in bed, her eyes dry and red. She endured all her pain and resentment silently.
As a grown-up, she had to bottle up her feelings. Any breakdowns or tears were for private moments only.
Once her mother was discharged, she would end this marriage.
The thought of divorcing Jayceon in just a few days made her shudder.
Overwhelmed by her emotions in the lonely night, she was left in complete agony.
Curled up with her face in her hands, she sobbed helplessly.
Alone in the quiet room, she looked small and lost.
***
At the hospital, after calming Georgina, Jayceon went to the nurses' station for a thermometer. A group of nurses gathered together, chatting.
When he saw the diamond bracelet in one nurse's hand, his eyes narrowed.
He stepped forward and took it, checking the engraving inside.
Once he confirmed it was the one he'd given Arabella, Jayceon's heart sank.
"How did you get this?" he demanded.
Arabella was particular.
He always had an "A" engraved on her gifts. The mark was meant for her.
This bracelet was hers. She'd been here.
The nurses were startled by Jayceon's expression.
One of them quickly explained, "I'm sorry, Mr. Melendez. A very beautiful lady threw this away. She didn't want it."
He picked on the words "She didn't want it".
A few minutes later, Jayceon returned to the room and handed Georgina the thermometer. "I've arranged for a caregiver to stay with you tonight."
Georgina got out of bed weakly. "Jay, but you promised you'd stay..."
He helped her lie back down. "Something's come up. I need to take care of it."
She let go reluctantly but added softly, "Jay, it's my fault. We kept you from home these days. Your wife must be upset. You should go comfort her."
He adjusted her pillow and tucked her in. "Don't worry. She's fine."
Late that night, Jayceon returned home to a dark, silent house.
He stood still for a moment before turning on the lights. He wasn't used to coming back to a dark house.
For three years, no matter how late it was, Arabella would always wait for him in the living room, curled up watching TV.
Upon seeing him, she would dash over barefoot and cling to him, impossible to shake off.
Now, she wouldn't even leave a light on for him.
She was really upset.
He walked tiredly into the dark bedroom. By the dim light from the window, he turned on the bedside lamp.
Arabella had unconsciously buried her face in the pillow.
Jayceon sat on the edge of the bed and gently brushed the hair from her forehead, checking if she was asleep.
But she kept her face hidden under the thin blanket.
After a moment, he turned and went into the bathroom.
Listening to the running water from the bathroom, Arabella slowly opened her eyes.
Her damp eyelashes fluttered. She pulled the blanket back over her head.
Jayceon came out wearing a dark robe, his hair still wet.
He bent over the bed to check on her. Seeing her asleep, he turned off the light and went to his study.
Alone in the dark study, he stood by the window, lit a cigarette, and held up the diamond bracelet.
She couldn't have found out.
If she had, she would've made a scene, making sure no one could have peace.
It must've been a coincidence that the bracelet was found on the 13th floor.
Chapter 7
The next morning, as Arabella got ready to bring breakfast to her parents, Jayceon came out of the dressing room, fully dressed.
She had no desire to talk to him. She picked up her phone to leave.
Jayceon caught her smooth wrist. "Where's the bracelet? You're not wearing it."
She looked down, her voice hoarse. "I don't know. Maybe I lost it."
Ignoring her rough voice, he watched her closely. "I saw Emmie last night."
Only then did she realize he was testing her.
She took a deep breath and met his eyes. "After we parted last night, I went to the hospital to see Mom. Emmie said you went to the 13th floor. I tried to look for you there but couldn't find you, so I came home."
He pulled the bracelet from his pocket. "You dropped this at the hospital. I brought it back."
He avoided saying why he was there.
As he tried to put it back on her wrist, she pushed his hand away. "I don't want it."
For once, he tried to be patient. "Just wear this for now. When things calm down, I'll take you to pick out one you really like."
Arabella felt like she was losing her mind.
She could no longer hold on to all the bottled-up pain and resentment.
She collapsed almost instantly. "I said I don't want it! I don't want it! I don't want it!
"If it's not one-of-a-kind, I don't want it! And if I'm not your one-and-only, I don't want you either!"
Seeing her outburst, Jayceon actually felt relieved.
Arabella had been spoiled since childhood. If things didn't go her way, she'd throw a fit.
She was just upset the gift wasn't special or unique enough.
He placed his hands on her slim waist and leaned in to kiss her.
The moment their lips touched, she shoved him away hard.
She didn't respond with the same fervor as before, where his slight initiative would instantly ignite her passion.
She pushed him away, crying, "No, no, no!"
She pushed him, shoved him, hit him, like a madwoman.
Jayceon grabbed Arabella's wrists impatiently. "Arabella, don't go too far."
He could tolerate her occasional spoiled outbursts, but not this hysterical state.
He couldn't reason with her while she was in this state.
Arabella lost control. "This is who I've always been! Did you just notice?"
Jayceon remained calm. "Is a bracelet really worth all this?"
She started throwing things wildly. "You know exactly what you've done, Jayceon!"
Sobbing uncontrollably, she pushed him toward the door. "Weren't you refusing to come home? Then go! Get out!"
Jayceon pulled her into his arms. "Stop it. You're going to hurt yourself."
Just then, his phone vibrated, interrupting their fight.
The way he quickly silenced it set her off even more.
She grabbed for his phone. "Answer it! You're always so busy with work. Answer your damn phone!"
She'd had enough.
When he wouldn't let her take it, she bit his hand.
He shook her off in pain, and she fell hard onto the floor.
A dull thud echoed. The room went completely silent.
Breathing heavily, Jayceon looked down at Arabella. She lay still on the floor, hair messy. Finally, exhausted, he turned away.
When she was little, she was mischievous but charming.
As a teen, she was innocent and bright. She stood out everywhere she went.
Later, she became passionate and bold. She always clung to him, demanding kisses and hugs. She loved him without holding back.
After marriage, she grew gentle, docile, and thoughtful. She learned to care for him.
At every stage, she'd been vibrant and dignified.
She'd never acted like a shrew, yelling and screaming at him like this.
"We'll talk when you've calmed down," he said, leaving without looking back.
Just then, Kimberly came to see Arabella.
Jayceon glanced toward the second floor and reminded her, "Bella isn't doing well. I'll order her some food. Make sure she eats it later. Then take her out to clear her head."
Before Kimberly could respond, he was gone.
Arabella had pretended to faint before.
Whenever she made him angry, she'd play sick, play weak, play victim.
Every time he saw her pitiful face, he'd let it go.
But this time, she'd gone too far.
She needed to cool off.
Kimberly went upstairs to the master bedroom.
Finding Arabella on the floor, she panicked. "Bella!"
As she helped her up, she realized Arabella was actually unconscious.
She tried calling Jayceon, but his line was busy.
In the end, she had to call for an ambulance.
When Arabella woke up in a hospital room, her mother-in-law, Tabitha Clemons, and Kimberly were at her bedside.
Tabitha leaned over worriedly. "Bella, are you feeling okay? Do you feel hurt anywhere?"
Chapter 8
Weakly, Arabella shook her head. "Tabitha, why am I in the hospital?"
Kimberly helped her sit up. "You passed out at home."
Slowly, Arabella remembered the fight; she bit him and got pushed away.
She looked around the room and asked Kimberly, "Did your brother just drop me here and leave?"
"I was the one who called for the ambulance. Jayceon..." Kimberly blurted out, but immediately caught herself when she noticed Arabella's expression.
Arabella closed her eyes. The last slim hope was shattered.
His unforgettable love was back, and she'd brought him a five-year-old son.
Why would he care what happened to her?
Her heart ached terribly. Arabella covered her chest with both hands.
Curling up, she whispered, "Tabitha, Kim, my mom just had heart bypass surgery. I don't want her to know I'm ill. Can you take me home, please?"
Tabitha quickly sent Kimberly to get the car. "The doctor said you fainted from low blood sugar and stress. It's better to rest at home where it's comfortable.
"Don't worry. I've already called Jay. I told him to come back as soon as possible."
On the way back, Arabella asked Kimberly and Tabitha not to interfere in her relationship with Jayceon.
No matter how much it hurt, she wanted to end this herself.
Back home, Kimberly and Tabitha stayed with Arabella all day, feeding her medicine and food.
But Jayceon never showed up.
Arabella slept fitfully through the day. By evening, she'd regained a little strength.
After convincing her in-laws to go home and rest, she stood in front of the bathroom mirror.
She barely recognized herself. In just a few days, she looked worn out and hollow.
After brushing her teeth, she put the cup back.
It slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.
She picked up a broken piece. The portrait of her and Jayceon on the cup was now broken into countless tiny bits.
She'd custom-made this cup online for their first wedding anniversary.
They'd made two identical ones: one for him and one for her. They were printed with a photo she'd secretly taken while leaning close to Jayceon.
At first, Jayceon had called it childish and refused to use it.
She'd begged him for a week. Only after she cried all night did he finally give in.
Arabella's calm emotions erupted again.
She stood up, smashed the other cup, then swept everything off the bathroom counter, shattering it all.
She didn't stop there. She moved through the bathroom, tearing things down, throwing whatever she could.
About ten minutes later, she collapsed weakly onto the floor, surrounded by scattered bath products, shards of glass and porcelain, towels, charging cables...
Lying in the wreckage, she cried, then suddenly laughed.
She had imagined countless possibilities for a future with Jayceon.
But she never thought it would end like this.
How pathetic.
***
At the Melendez's mansion, Tabitha was furious when Jayceon finally returned. "Jay, how did you take care of Bella? She ended up in the hospital! Did you even know?"
Jayceon's expression was indifferent. "What did the doctor say?"
Kimberly glared at him. "The doctor said she has low blood sugar. She passed out due to distress."
He just casually responded, "OK."
Tabitha scolded him, "Your wife fainted at home! That's your failure as a husband! Is that all you have to say?"
Jayceon replied calmly, "Don't worry. She's fine."
He knew her too well. She was pretending.
Tabitha tossed Arabella's medical report at Jayceon. He glanced at it.
"She's capable now. She told the family about it and even fooled the doctors," he thought.
Tabitha handed him a thermos of warm soup and urged him to go check on Arabella.
Jayceon's father, Conrad Melendez, cut in sharply, "What do you know as a housewife? A man should be building his career, not babysitting his wife."
Conrad went on, "She's a broke socialite with nothing to offer. We're already being generous by not making Jay divorce her. She should know her place."
Jayceon's grandfather added coldly, "She has no career or children. She can't even take care of herself. What good is she?"
Jayceon didn't want to discuss this topic.
He brushed them off, took the thermos, and walked out.
Kimberly followed him outside. "Jay, is that woman back?"
Jayceon paused, his hand on the car door.
He studied her expression. "What woman?"
Kimberly clenched her fists. "That night, you posted on Instagram of that woman and a child. I saw it!"
Jayceon's eyes darkened. "Did you tell Bella?"
Kimberly was intimidated by his gaze.
She stammered, "I... I wouldn't dare. I like Bella too much. I didn't want to scare her away."
Arabella must have a plan since she didn't want her to get involved.
Jayceon relaxed slightly.
Chapter 9
He warned her, "Keep your mouth shut. If I find out you talked, consider your allowance gone."
As he drove off, Kimberly stomped her feet in frustration.
Too bad. Her brother really was cheating.
Jayceon returned to the home he shared with Arabella. The place felt so cold and quiet.
He left the good container in the dining room and went upstairs.
Not finding her in the bedroom, he took off his suit jacket, removed his tie, and unbuttoned his collar. He then turned to go to the bathroom to shower.
She wasn't home at this hour. She must be at the hospital taking care of her mom.
She couldn't even keep up the pretense properly.
As he reached the bathroom door, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He saw the caller ID, then stopped to answer.
Georgina Carrillo's guilty voice came through the line, "Jay, I'm so sorry to drag you away from your work to look after me here. Could you please help get me discharged? I'm almost fully recovered."
Some of the tension left Jayceon's face. "Stay a few more days. When you're discharged, I'll take you two shopping."
Georgina sounded moved. "Thank you, Jay. You haven't changed at all in six years. Get some rest. Thank you for your help these days."
After hanging up, Jayceon set his phone down and pushed open the bathroom door.
The sight that greeted him was chaos, as someone had smashed this place.
The bathroom light was on, the door ajar. Jayceon's eyes darkened.
He stepped inside and immediately saw Arabella lying on her back on the floor.
His chest tightened. He lifted her upper body, which was cold. "Even if you're upset, you can't do this to yourself."
Arabella opened her eyes slowly. They were hollow.
She tried to speak, but no sound came. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
His embrace still felt warm, but she no longer belonged there.
Frowning, Jayceon carried her to the bed.
She curled under the blanket, silent.
He turned to leave, then turned back and sat on the edge of the bed.
Gently, he pulled the blanket down just enough to see her face. "Have you calmed down now?"
Jayceon said, "If you've calmed down, we can talk."
Arabella was completely devastated.
She felt too weak to speak. She lay there with her eyes closed, looking lifeless.
Jayceon hesitated, then got up and went to clean the bathroom.
He and Arabella had fought before, but she'd never smashed things.
He didn't need to cajole her.
Once she cooled off, she'd always come to him to make peace.
After all, she loved him too much.
After he missed their third anniversary, she even refused his makeup gift because she was too upset.
Jayceon took a shower and changed into pajamas. He then went downstairs to bring a bowl of oatmeal.
He put the bowl on the nightstand and went over to Arabella. "Get up and eat some oatmeal."
Arabella rolled over, turning her back to him.
Jayceon sat on the bed. He pulled her up roughly and held her against his chest.
"Be good. Have some oatmeal, and I'll forgive what you did today. You faked fainting and told my mom on me."
Arabella's voice was hoarse, her expression blank. "Jayceon, if I died, would you think I was faking that too?"
Before the Palmer family went bankrupt, she was indeed spoiled and willful.
But in the three years since marrying Jayceon, she'd long stopped being willful.
Jayceon turned Arabella around to face him. "Looks like you still aren't calm enough."
Arabella said, "I can't be calm around you."
Jayceon let go of her and stood up. "Fine. I'll stay somewhere else then. We'll talk once you've calmed down."
After he said that, he turned and went into the walk-in closet to change. A few minutes later, he came out fully dressed.
Jayceon stopped at the foot of the bed and stood there quietly for a moment.
Seeing Arabella still looking spiritless, he headed out, leaving Arabella alone to deal with her churning emotions.
The next morning, when Kimberly came to see Arabella, she was still in bed.
Kimberly felt bad for her, but she didn't dare say too much. She got Arabella out of bed, ate breakfast with her, and took her out for a walk.
Jayceon had always been strict with her.
If she misspoke, he'd cut off her allowance for good.
After getting some fresh air, Arabella felt a bit better.
Kimberly dragged Arabella to their family's mall. "Arabella, you didn't tell Jay about that woman, did you?"
Arabella didn't want to discuss it. "Kim, I'm in a bad mood right now. I need some time to think it over."
Chapter 10
Kimberly had a big mouth. If Arabella told her she planned to divorce Jayceon, the whole Melendez family would know within minutes.
And when that happened, her family would know too.
Her mom was still in the hospital, so she couldn't bring it up right now.
Kimberly quickly changed the subject. "It's fine, Arabella. Let's shop at our mall. Pick whatever you want. Jayceon will pay for it."
Arabella nodded numbly.
She'd lost interest in everything lately.
She had no desire to shop.
When they got to the mall entrance, security stopped them. One guard said, "Sorry, ladies, the whole complex is booked today."
Kimberly was shocked. "Who in Zelmere has the power to book our Melendez family's top-tier mall?"
Arabella tugged Kimberly's arm. "Forget it. Let's just go somewhere else."
She'd just wanted some fresh air anyway. She hadn't planned on buying anything.
Kimberly didn't budge. "Go ask who booked it."
Seeing that Kimberly and Arabella were dressed elegantly, the guard didn't dare brush them off. "Ladies, we really can't disclose that."
Kimberly gave him a warning look. She said, "This mall is the Melendez family's property. I'm the family heiress, Kimberly Melendez. If you keep stopping me, I'll fire you on the spot!"
The guards were intimidated. Kimberly took the chance and pulled Arabella into the mall.
Kimberly pulled Arabella onto the elevator. "Arabella, let's go take a look at the shoes on the third floor."
When they got off the elevator, they ran into Jayceon.
Right then, he squatted in front of a woman, helping her try on shoes.
The woman had her head lowered, long hair covering half her face. They couldn't see her features clearly.
Jayceon was gently fastening a shoelace for Georgina.
Arabella clutched her chest. Her already pale face went completely white.
Only Georgina could get Jayceon to help her put on her shoes.
As it turned out, "staying out for a few days" meant he was with Georgina.
In three years of marriage, it had always been her serving and pleasing Jayceon.
He had never thoughtfully put shoes on her or handed her a pair of slippers.
The shocking scene froze her in place like a fool.
"Arabella." Kimberly steadied her as Arabella swayed, gritting her teeth angrily.
Arabella grabbed Kimberly's arm and turned to leave.
She couldn't make a scene.
She had to think of her parents in the hospital and Jayceon's reputation.
But Kimberly had had enough.
They'd seen it with their own eyes. It wasn't her who told on him.
Jayceon had no reason to cut her allowance now.
Kimberly shook off Arabella's hand and hurled her purse hard at Georgina.
"Bitch!" she yelled, charging straight at Georgina.
Arabella hurried after her.
Jayceon reacted fast. He pushed Georgina into a fitting room and closed the door before Kimberly could reach her.
He turned to Arabella, not a trace of guilt in his eyes. He demanded, "Are you following me?"
Arabella's lips moved. She gazed at him with a hurt look. "Jayceon, you're supposed to be at work right now."
But he'd booked the whole mall to go shopping with his first love, and even put shoes on her himself.
Jayceon still didn't explain but said, "Take Kim home."
He stood in front of the fitting room door, blocking Arabella from getting close.
Kimberly couldn't stand it anymore. She lunged forward, trying to open the fitting room door. "Jay, move! Let that vixen out!"
Jayceon pushed Kimberly away. "Shut up."
He gave her a warning look. He said, "Take Arabella home."
Jayceon rubbed his forehead tiredly.
Jayceon lost his patience. Seeing he couldn't reason with his sister, he turned back to Arabella.
"Arabella, take Kim home now. We'll talk tonight."
Arabella's vision was blurry, but she stared hard at Jayceon. "Since we've run into each other, let me meet her."
Jayceon said, "That's not necessary."
Arabella pressed, "What if I insist?"
Jayceon became serious. "Will you leave on your own, or should I have security escort you out?"
They stared at each other. Arabella's despair broke through, and tears spilled over. "Well, I'd really like to see what you'd do to me for the woman you love."
Jayceon's low voice was edged with impatience. "Arabella, don't make me regret marrying you."
Arabella stared blankly at his face, biting her lower lip until it bled.
He probably already regretted it.
The next second, she turned away in humiliation and ran away.
Jayceon watched her retreat, and his chest tightened.
Kimberly was crying with rage. "Jay, if Arabella really leaves you one day, I'll buy everyone in Zelmere coffee!"
With that, she turned and ran after Arabella.
Jayceon stood in front of the fitting room for a minute before finally opening the door.
Georgina was startled by the look on his face.
Chapter 11
She said apologetically, "Jay, why didn't you let me meet your wife? If you keep hiding me, she'll just get the wrong idea."
Jayceon rubbed his forehead tiredly. "She has a temper, and Kim's even worse. I was afraid you'd get hurt."
Jayceon's defense made Georgina feel incredibly reassured.
She urged him to go after Arabella, "Jay, forget the shopping. Go catch up with her and explain to her properly."
Jayceon stayed calm. "Kim's with her. She'll be fine. I'll take you back to the hospital now."
He had the staff pack up all the shoes Georgina had just tried on. Then he walked her out of the mall.
The driver had worked for the Melendez family for a long time. When he saw Jayceon come out, he wiped sweat off his forehead. "Mr. Melendez, Mrs. Melendez just ran off crying."
"It's OK. Let's go." Jayceon pulled the car door open. He and Georgina got in.
Georgina handed Jayceon a bottle of water. "Here you are, Jay."
Jayceon didn't take it.
She glanced at him and noticed he looked calm, but his eyes were blank. He was totally zoned out.
Georgina cleared her throat and called Jayceon again. Only then did he snap back to reality.
Georgina looked guilty and torn. She turned to him and begged, "Jay, please promise me you won't tell anyone about me and my son."
Jayceon looked confused. "What's wrong?"
Tears welled up in her eyes before she spoke, "Back then, your grandfather used you to threaten me. He forced me to break up with you, leave the country, and marry another man.
"All these years, I never stopped thinking about you. My husband abused me. He forced me to have his child. I developed severe depression.
"Sometimes, I just wanted to hide somewhere and quietly die. But I couldn't leave my child behind.
"He died of a drug overdose over a year ago. That's how we got free. I guess the odds were finally in our favor.
"I was all alone overseas. I really missed you and my parent. So, I snuck back with my son.
"Jay, I'm so scared your grandfather might hurt us again. Please, don't tell your family I'm back. I'm really terrified."
Jayceon nodded.
Georgina went on, "Jay, I really don't want to remember those awful things. I'm scared people will judge me and my son. Please don't tell anyone about my son's background until I'm better, not even your wife, OK?"
***
Georgina's emotions were in turmoil. She even had thoughts of suicide. Jayceon felt bad and pulled her into his arms.
"Gina, don't talk like that. All this happened to you because of me. I won't tell anyone about what you've been through. I'll take care of you and your kid.
Hearing his promise, Georgina smiled through her tears. "Don't worry, Jay. I'll get better soon. I won't make you keep worrying about me."
Jayceon took Georgina back to the hospital. He made sure she ate lunch, then headed to the office.
He saw over a dozen missed calls on his phone from Kimberly and other family members. He hesitated for a bit, then called Kimberly back.
When she answered, he asked calmly, "Has Arabella stopped fussing?"
Kimberly's voice was shaky on the other end. "Arabella's missing! Mom and I are still out looking for her!"
The call ended abruptly. Jayceon paused for a second, then stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window.
Those two troublemakers must've teamed up again to lie to him.
Jayceon's assistant, Steve Vinson, came in. "Mr. Melendez, shall we start the meeting at 2:30 as planned?"
Jayceon lit a cigarette. His tone was calm. "Yeah."
Steve had worked for Jayceon for years. Despite his boyish face, he carried himself with a stern and rigid demeanor. He was capable and mature with exceptional combat skills. He was Jayceon's most trusted right-hand man.
After work, Jayceon left the office on time.
Normally, the driver did exactly what he was told. But this time, he unexpectedly asked, "Mr. Melendez, are we heading home or to Ms. Carrillo's place?"
Jayceon hesitated for a second before saying, "Go home."
The driver's tense expression relaxed into a smile.
Jayceon leaned back in the seat and closed his eyes.
He'd originally planned to stay out for a few days to let Arabella cool off.
But she'd followed him and caught him today. Who knew how she'd kick up a fuss with him later?
Half the day had passed already. He had no idea what the house looked like after she'd trashed it, but she should've gotten her anger out by now.
If she had calmed down, he needed to talk with her.
Jayceon got home. Arabella wasn't there.
Just like usual, he took a shower, changed into his pajamas, and went to his study to work.
Chapter 12
A little after 9 p.m., Tabitha and Kimberly showed up.
Tabitha had been looking for Arabella all day. She even grew blisters on the corner of her mouth from anxiety. She was fuming when she saw Jayceon acting like nothing was wrong.
Jayceon tried to comfort Tabitha, "Don't worry, Mom. She'll be fine."
He knew better than anyone how dramatic Arabella could be.
Once, for her birthday, he'd been a day late with her gift.
She got so mad that she hid somewhere.
When he finally found her, she was soaking in a hot spring, sipping red wine, and getting a massage from a top-tier therapist.
She knew how to enjoy life and loved herself too much.
Even if she drove everyone else crazy, she'd never let anything happen to herself.
Tabitha splashed a cup of coffee in Jayceon's face. Her voice shook from fury.
"Jayceon," she said. "I've raised you for thirty years. I've always been proud of you as a mother. But now I see it. You're just as cold-blooded and heartless as your father!"
Jayceon remained unfazed. "You're overreacting, Mom."
Tabitha's eyes were filled with tears. "Arabella is your wife. That girl has loved you since she was a child. You two argued, and you gave her a cold shoulder? Do you want to end up divorcing her?"
Jayceon's tone was firm. "Mom, we won't get divorced. I know what I'm doing."
Kimberly gave Tabitha a thumbs-up. "Jay, do you really think Arabella won't leave you because she loves you?"
She added, "Just remember a profound love has no tolerance for betrayal."
"Shut up," Jayceon said.
Kimberly pouted and fell silent.
Tabitha and Kimberly left. Jayceon lit a cigarette.
At 3 a.m., he called Steve, "You don't need to come to the company for the next couple of days. Go keep an eye on the hospital. Call me if you see Arabella there."
Right before hanging up, he added, "Her mother just had heart surgery. She needs rest. Be careful not to disturb her."
On the other end of the line, Steve widened his eyes and checked the time.
It was 3 a.m. now. His boss wanted him to go stake out the hospital at this hour?
Was his insomnia acting up again?
Three days later, Arabella still hadn't returned.
Tabitha and Kimberly wanted to call the police and notify the Palmer family, but Jayceon disagreed.
Jayceon was sure Arabella was fine. She'd be back home in a few days.
His father, Conrad Melendez, and grandfather, Chester Melendez, also disagreed with calling the police.
After all, the Melendez family's daughter-in-law going missing wasn't something to be proud of.
Besides, the Palmer family was already bankrupt. Arabella had no use to the Melendez family. She wasn't worth the effort.
Time flew by, and soon it was the day Kayla was being discharged.
Jayceon sent Steve to pick Kayla up from the hospital. He went to handle Georgina's discharge procedure himself.
At 9 a.m., Steve saw Arabella arrive at the hospital to pick up Kayla. He immediately called his boss.
Jayceon was helping Georgina pack when he got the news that Arabella was back. He didn't show much reaction.
He gave Steve a day off.
As for Arabella, he didn't need to do anything. She'd come home on her own.
Jayceon carried the luggage and got into the elevator with Georgina.
Meanwhile, Arabella was waiting for the elevator with her parents.
The doors opened. Arabella immediately saw Jayceon.
He was shielding Georgina, trying to keep her from being bumped, just like he'd done for her in the elevator that day.
After days apart, they stared at each other in silence.
With just one glance, Arabella turned away.
She had been hiding out in a cheap motel for the past few days, trapped in a cycle of despair. She cried until she drifted into a fitful sleep, only to wake up hungry. After forcing herself to eat, she would vomit, then collapse back into sleep, just to wake up and cry all over again.
The whole time, Jayceon hadn't called or texted her once.
After all that suffering, she thought she was starting to feel better.
Still, seeing Jayceon embrace Georgina in the elevator broke her heart.
At least her mom was out of the hospital now.
She could finally divorce Jayceon and be done with it.
Jayceon watched Arabella's thin figure, his eyes narrowing.
How did she get so pale and thin in just a few days?
More people started getting into the elevator. Jayceon looked away and pulled Georgina closer to him.
Arabella stopped her parents, saying the elevator was too crowded. She didn't let them get on.
Arabella went home with her parents and didn't rush off.
Roderick went out to buy groceries and cook.
Chapter 13
Kayla pulled Arabella into the bedroom. "Bella, be honest with me. Did you argue with Jay?"
A mother knows her daughter best.
Kayla had noticed how worn out Arabella looked these past few days.
When Arabella cried nonstop, Kayla got really worried. "Bella, did Jay do something to hurt you?"
Kayla knew Arabella too well.
Arabella loved Jayceon more than she loved herself. Kayla believed only Jayceon's betrayal could hurt her this badly.
Arabella didn't say a word. She just buried herself in Kayla's arms and cried her heart out all over again.
As a woman herself, Kayla understood immediately from her daughter's reaction.
Kayla cried with Arabella.
Eventually, Arabella cried herself out. She was exhausted.
She pulled herself together and told Kayla, "Mom, the woman he loves is back. I want a divorce."
Kayla gently wiped Arabella's tears. "Whatever you decide, your father and I will support you."
When they came out of the room, Arabella saw her father standing by the door with red-rimmed eyes. His hands were shaking so hard he could barely hold the grocery basket.
This strong, dependable man felt utterly helpless as he said to Arabella, "It's all my fault. I'm useless."
If the Palmer family hadn't fallen apart, he'd never have let Arabella suffer like this.
But all these years, the Palmers had relied on Jayceon's support.
They owed the Melendez family. He was too ashamed to even go and demand an explanation for Arabella.
That night, Arabella didn't go back. She stayed with her parents.
Jayceon got home and noticed Arabella wasn't there, but he wasn't surprised.
She was always very caring.
Her mother had just been discharged. It made sense for her to stay and keep her company.
Jayceon let his family know Arabella was back, so they wouldn't worry anymore.
Tabitha and Kimberly rushed over at the news, only to find she wasn't there.
Jayceon explained, "Her mother was discharged from the hospital today. She's staying with her parents."
Tabitha raised her hand to slap him, but the blow never landed.
She said, "Jay, Kayla was just discharged. Shouldn't you go help them?"
Jayceon didn't think it was necessary. "Mom, Bella's parents are very understanding. They won't mind."
The Palmer family had gone bankrupt, so they couldn't help him with his career.
But Arabella's parents were kind, loving, and reasonable. They never actively caused trouble for him, which was one less thing to worry about.
Whatever trouble it might be, it didn't bother him.
Kimberly was furious. "Jay, how can you be so indifferent? Arabella was missing for days, and she just got back. The least you could do is go see her and explain yourself!"
Jayceon said, "Don't worry. She'll come back on her own."
Tabitha was furious. "Jayceon, you're just as cold-blooded and heartless as your father. I didn't divorce him back then because I couldn't bear to leave you and your sister. I've regretted it for decades."
She continued, "But you might not be as lucky as your father. You and Arabella don't have children. You don't have that bond with her. Should you stay cold and cruel, she'll leave you eventually!"
Jayceon's tone was certain. "Mom, don't be so dramatic. Arabella won't divorce me."
He remembered Arabella's wedding vows clearly.
She said she would give up her life before she gave up on him.
Kimberly rolled her eyes in frustration.
Tabitha and Kimberly left Jayceon's house and went to the Palmer's place to pick up Arabella.
Kayla and Roderick politely entertained her, but didn't agree to let Arabella leave with them.
Kimberly held Arabella's hand and pleaded, "Arabella, Jay knows he was wrong. Come back with us. Mom will slap him to help you vent your anger!"
Arabella had decided to divorce Jayceon and originally didn't want to involve the elder Melendez family members.
But since Tabitha was here, Arabella might as well make things clear.
She got Kimberly to sit beside her, her voice calm.
She said to Tabitha, "Tabitha, I've made up my mind. I want to divorce Jay."
Tabitha's expression changed.
Kimberly stood up anxiously. "Arabella, I know Jay is a jerk, but you've been together for so many years. Please don't be reckless."
Arabella felt a bitter ache inside.
It was true they had been together for many years, but it had always been her own one-sided devotion.
Arabella's voice was firm. "I've thought it through. Don't try to change my mind."
Kayla's eyes were swollen from crying, but she didn't make things difficult for Tabitha. "Tabitha, we'll always remember how you guys have helped us over the years. Jay loves someone else, so they should get divorced, especially since they don't have kids yet."
Tabitha left the Palmer's home without another word.
Chapter 14
She had experienced her husband's betrayal when she was young. She understood how devastating it could be better than anyone.
For the sake of Kimberly and Jayceon and the interests of both families, she had forced herself to endure it.
After Conrad was caught cheating, he immediately cut ties with his mistress and returned to her. He didn't even dare acknowledge the illegitimate child.
But that cold, ruthless nature could never truly change.
The Melendez men were calm and calculating. They only cared about power and advantage.
Chester was like that. Her husband Conrad was like that.
And now the son she raised was just the same.
Tabitha had seen Arabella grow up. Arabella was still young. Tabitha wanted to see her happy.
As a woman, she should let Arabella go.
But as a mother, she didn't want Jayceon's marriage to fail.
Out of options, Tabitha went back to Jayceon's house.
He was still awake. Tabitha thought there might still be hope. "It's the weekend tomorrow. Let's go visit the Palmers with some gifts then. Apologize to Arabella's parents, explain things clearly, and bring Arabella home."
Jayceon hadn't slept properly for several days and looked exhausted. "Mom, I'll handle things with Arabella. Don't worry."
Kimberly stomped her foot in frustration. "Jay, Arabella wants to divorce you!"
Jayceon's expression slowly froze.
Then, he collected himself.
He warned Kimberly, "Kim, you're not a child anymore. Don't talk nonsense."
Arabella had stayed at her parents' house for two days.
She checked the calendar. It was already mid-June, the rainy season.
She stepped out of her neighborhood just after a steady rain had passed.
The downpour left everything in shades of gray.
The air was damp and stifling.
Arabella deliberately waited until Monday, when Jayceon would be at the office, to go back and pack her things.
Even though she wasn't the one who cheated, she no longer knew how to face him.
Whether she fought with him or not, made a scene or stayed silent, the outcome would be the same.
It was better to preserve the last bit of dignity between them.
Returning to the home she'd lived in for three years, Arabella went straight upstairs.
Everything in the bedroom was exactly as she'd left it that day.
The bowl of oatmeal Jayceon had left on the nightstand remained untouched, and the bedsheets were still in the same disarray as before.
It seemed he hadn't been staying here either while she was gone.
Her mind involuntarily conjured images of Jayceon being intimate with Georgina. Her heart ached uncontrollably.
Arabella walked into the walk-in closet and pulled out a suitcase.
She packed a few pieces of clothes she wore often and some personal items.
The Palmer family had gone bankrupt before she married Jayceon. He had supported her for all three years of their marriage. Nothing in this house was bought with money she'd earned.
Her gaze fell on a white doodle-print T-shirt. Arabella paused.
She took the shirt off its hanger.
This shirt was a matching couple's item from the summer she married Jayceon. They bought it when she secretly visited him on a business trip and persuaded him to go shopping.
The doodles on it were hand-painted by an art student.
She remembered the art student asking her what design she wanted. She had kissed Jayceon right there in public and then told the student, "My husband is already handsome enough. Make me look pretty in your drawing, or I won't be good enough for him."
After hers was finished, Jayceon said he had something to do and refused to wait any longer.
Thus, his shirt was plain white, with nothing on it.
Arabella opened Jayceon's closet. From the very bottom drawer, she pulled out that plain white T-shirt. She threw it into the trash can, along with hers.
For three years, no matter how much she cooed or begged him, Jayceon had never worn it once.
Arabella spaced out for a moment, then made a call to hire a few cleaners.
She had them do a thorough cleaning of the 600 square meters duplex.
She got rid of everything that had anything to do with her.
One cleaner couldn't bear to watch. "Ma'am, should we throw these wedding photos away, too?"
Arabella only said one word, "Yes."
By late afternoon, Arabella paid the cleaners and had them take everything away with the trash.
Looking at the simple, spacious room, Arabella could finally breathe a little easier.
She placed her suitcase by the entryway and sent Jayceon a WhatsApp message.
Jayceon saw Arabella's WhatsApp message but didn't reply immediately.
Since she had calmed down and come home on her own, he could let the previous incident go. He could just consider it over.
Then, Steve came in. "Mr. Melendez, the car is ready."
Chapter 15
Jayceon said, "Cancel my evening appointment."
Steve obeyed without questioning.
His boss hadn't gone looking for his wife when she was missing for days. Instead, he'd made Steve camp out at the hospital, smelling disinfectant for days.
Now that Arabella was back, he immediately canceled the dinner to rush home. His boss did care for her, after all.
Just as Jayceon was about to get in the car and leave the Melendez Building, Georgina ran up to him in the rain.
Jayceon opened the car door for her. "You should be resting at home. What are you doing out here?"
In the back seat of the luxury car, Georgina clutched Jayceon's sleeve, her voice firm. "Jay, I've thought about it carefully. I think I should just leave."
Jayceon's expression darkened. "Don't be ridiculous."
Georgina looked worried. "Jay, your wife is so angry with you. If you don't go explain to her properly, she'll never be okay with this."
She paused for a moment, then continued, "I've endured enough pain these past few years. I don't want people to badmouth me anymore.
"Jay, maybe this is just my fate. We're from different worlds. Even if I love you enough to die for you, I'll never earn your family's respect. I don't want to hold you back. I'd rather disappear than have your wife target me and my son."
With that, Georgina got out of the car into the rain.
Jayceon got out and chased after her, stopping her. His eyes were full of concern. "Stop talking nonsense. I won't let anyone gossip about you two. No matter what happens, I won't abandon you."
He practically carried Georgina back into the car.
She cried and struggled, trying to get out. "I'd rather die than have your wife call me a gold-digger or a homewrecker!"
Jayceon assured her again, "Gina, don't worry. I won't tell her anything about you two, so she has no way to hurt you. I promise."
Georgina stopped crying.
She looked at him, half-convinced. "But if you don't explain to her, what if she asks for a divorce?"
Jayceon's tone was certain. "Don't worry. She won't."
She'd definitely make a scene. But divorce? That was unlikely.
Finally, a smile appeared on Georgina's tear-streaked face.
She wiped her tears and got out of the car again, ignoring Jayceon's attempts to stop her.
"Don't worry about me. Go back and comfort her. I'll be fine on my own."
Then she ran off into the rain.
Jayceon was too worried to let her go. He told the driver to follow her.
The driver hesitated. "But Mr. Melendez, Mrs. Melendez is waiting for you at home..."
Jayceon's eyes were fixed on the direction Georgina had run. "She can wait. If Gina gets caught in the rain, she'll get sick."
The driver swallowed his words and did as he was told.
Over two hours later, Jayceon finally returned to the house he shared with Arabella.
It was almost 8 PM.
Three full hours had passed since Arabella sent him that WhatsApp message.
Jayceon saw the suitcase by the entryway, and his eyes darkened.
But then his gaze swept over the lit living room, the flickering TV, and the quiet figure on the couch. His expression softened slightly.
He tossed his jacket onto the sofa and sat down next to Arabella. He placed the dark chocolate mousse he'd brought for her on the coffee table.
She'd lost weight lately. She definitely hadn't been eating properly. "Did you have dinner?"
Arabella's eyelashes fluttered slightly. Her gaze slowly fell on the container on the table.
This was the first time in three years of marriage that Jayceon had ever brought her food.
She muttered, "I'm not hungry."
Jayceon leaned in to kiss her, his low voice laced with lure. "If you're not hungry, let's go upstairs."
Arabella turned her head away, avoiding his breath and ignoring his implication.
For three years, Jayceon's way of apologizing was to take her to bed.
She used to be so pathetic.
No matter how angry she was, one night with Jayceon in bed would make it all go away.
But Jayceon was dirty now. She didn't want him.
Arabella pulled out the divorce papers she'd prepared earlier, along with a pen, and placed them on the coffee table.
She said, "Jay, let's get a divorce."
